Seattle Veterinary Associates

Professional Services

Through a collaboration of our three clinics, we are able to offer a wide variety of veterinary services. We are continuously adding services as they become available and our staff is thoroughly trained. A collection of specialized services are performed by board certified veterinarians traveling to our hospitals.

Annual Exams

We provide a comprehensive exam to thoroughly evaluate the health of every pet. Annual examinations are the foundation of a complete health care program. It is a time when we can review the past medical history, review any ongoing concerns and investigate changes that may be occurring. During the examination we consult on routine care practices and provide education to owners on how to better train, groom, feed and generally care for their pets.

In younger animals yearly exams are indicated to check the overall health of the animal, and also to educate owners about ongoing care and early detection of possible breed or conformational problems.

In older animals (cats over 10 years, small dogs over 10 years, large dogs over 7 years) more frequent exams may become necessary. In addition to the examination, blood analysis and urinalysis for older animals help us to find hidden problems that might be developing.

Prevention

Prevention and early involvement in health care are much less costly and ultimately more effective than waiting until an animal is obviously ill. Annual well pet examinations are one of the most important things owners can do for their pets.

Vaccine Consultations

Vaccine protocols and recommendations are continuously changing as new research emerges. Annual exams are a wonderful opportunity to learn about recent advances and discuss with your veterinarian the best approach for your pet and situation.

Labwork

We provide comprehensive laboratory services. Our in house laboratory is fully equipped and staffed to perform urinalyses, parasite identification, cytology, bacterial and fungal cultures, and numerous blood chemistries and tests. This allows us to provide both immediate or same day laboratory results for many common tests. We also utilize a regional veterinary laboratory, and other specialty laboratories, to provide more complicated and comprehensive tissue and organ functions evaluations, bacterial and viral isolation, immunological, histological, and cytological testing.

Dentistry

Green Lake Animal Hospital provides extensive dental services for all three locations. These services include both preventative and therapeutic dental work. Dental service provided are prophylaxis (thorough cleaning of all teeth), examination of teeth and gums post cleaning, polish and fluoride, subgingival curettage and root planning, therapeutic periodontal treatments, dental radiography, root canals, and dental extractions. Good oral health is one of the cornerstones of preventative health care for our patients. For more information on dental health please click here.

Surgery

We provide scheduled surgeries Tuesday through Thursday and emergency surgical services Monday through Saturday. Most surgeries are performed at the Green Lake Animal Hospital and Ravenna Union Bay Animal Hospital. Our services include sterilizations, biopsies and tumor removals, orthopedics, abdominal and thoracic surgery, and other specialized surgical procedures.

Cryosurgery is the surgical use of liquid nitrogen to freeze tissue. This methodology is well suited for eyelid growths, skin tags and skin growths such as adenoma and warts. Cryosurgery can often be employed using a combination of local anesthetics and sedation, thus avoiding general anesthesia.

A CO surgical laser is available at the Green Lake Animal Hospital. The laser scalpel seals nerve endings, small blood vessels and lymphatics providing less post operative pain and swelling and increasing surgical precision for our patients. Laser surgery is well suited for many mass removals, especially growths that occur in the mouth, ears and eyelids. Vascular tumors and cysts are also well suited for this instrumentation.

Veterinary surgical specialists are available for more complicated procedures such as total hip replacement, TPLO (tibial plane leveling osteotomy – one technique for the surgical correction of stifle (knee) problems), ear ablation, spinal and other neurosurgery, and procedures requiring specialized instrumentation.

Anesthesia

A full range of anesthetic services are available. An individualized anesthetic plan based on breed, age and medical status is formulated by your veterinarian. Balanced anesthesia provides the best selection of sedatives, pain medications, local, regional, and both injectable and inhaled general anesthetics. Only veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians administer anesthetic agents. Aggressive monitoring of all patients begins with the administration of pre-anesthetic agents and continues throughout the anesthesia until recovery. Our highly trained staff utilizes a number of different monitor modalities including respiratory monitoring via pulse oximetry and capnography and cardiac monitoring tracking ECG and blood pressure. In addition, patient comfort is enhanced with circulating warm water pads and forced air warming blankets in order to keep the patients warm during their anesthetic procedures.

Pain Management

A complete pain management program addresses both acute and chronic pain management for our patients. Preventative pain management for surgical and procedural pain is tailored to the patient, the degree of pain expected and the individual’s medical status. A chronic pain management program, for conditions like osteoarthritis, will be selected by the veterinarian and involves periodic revaluations and monitoring of the condition and organ systems.

Radiology

Our radiology services are provided at our Green Lake and Ravenna Union Bay facilities. This service will be added to the Queen Anne Animal Clinic in 2004. These services include skeletal and soft tissue studies as well as specialized contrast studies. All of our radiographs are evaluated in-house before being sent to a board certified veterinary radiologist for review. This provides us with a timely and accurate diagnostic interpretation of each study.

Oncology

Chemotherapy often offers an alternative or complimentary approach to cancer. The goal is to provide longevity for our patients without decreasing the quality of life of these pets. Each animal receives an individualized chemotherapy protocol and client instructions. Administration of chemotherapeutic agents is performed by our highly trained staff.

Boarding

Ravenna Union Bay Animal Hospital and Green Lake Animal Hospital offer on-site cat boarding. Clients may use either of these clinics for cat boarding. Additionally, medical boarding for dogs with medical needs is available at the Green Lake Animal Hospital.

Cardiology

Cardiology entails many areas of diagnosis and treatment of heart problems. The cardiac services typically can include a physical exam, thoracic radiographs, an electrocardiogram, laboratory blood analysis, an echocardiogram, and Doppler. A board certified cardiologist evaluates and recommends treatment options for these patients.

Ultrasonography

Ultrasound examinations provide a noninvasive diagnostic tool used to evaluate internal organs and tissue structure. Ultrasonography evaluates these through size, shape, location, internal structure, and differences in density. In addition to the urogenital and gastrointestinal organ systems, the liver, spleen, numerous other organs, and the status of a pregnancy can be safely evaluated.

In 2003, in house ultrasound capabilities were added to our services. Ultrasound images are recorded for a board certified veterinary radiologist to review. In addition, more involved ultrasounds and ultrasound guided biopsies services are provided by a mobile board certified veterinary radiologist. Ultrasound guided biopsies provide a precise and less invasive means of obtaining deep tissue samples for histopathological evaluation.

Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a procedure that utilizes a fiber optic endoscope to internally examine, evaluate and biopsy the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. Endoscopy can also be utilized to remove some foreign bodies from the upper GI tract. It is a procedure performed both by our doctors and in special cases a board certified veterinary internist.

Neurology

Diseases of and trauma to the nervous system are relatively common and at times present a diagnostic challenge. A board certified veterinary neurologist/neurosurgeon works with us on the more difficult cases. Neurological diseases can present as lameness, weakness, paralysis, seizures, or behavioral changes. In addition to a thorough neurological exam, diagnostic tests can include contrast radiography, cerebrospinal fluid collection and evaluation, computerized axial tomography (CAT Scan) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). All of these are available through SVA.

Tonometry

Tonometry is the instrumentation that allows us to measure intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye). Glaucoma is a painful disease that is characterized by increased pressure and often leads to blindness. Early detection is the key to preserving vision. Annual evaluations of breeds predisposed to glaucoma and patients with certain medical conditions are recommended.
